SHORT-EARED OWL

May 2009 - Over the past several years of Short-eared Owl research in Ontario, we've found that one of the other birds most commonly found in association with the owls is Wilson's Snipe.  Not only do they favour the same sort of grassy wetland habitat, but they also perform elaborate aerial courtship displays, most frequently toward dusk, so it is easy to survey for both species simultaneously.  (Photo by Kristen Keyes)
