SHORT-EARED OWL

The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is among the most rapidly declining of North American birds.  In 2003, MRF launched the first stage of a research program addressing gaps in our knowledge of the Short-eared Owl in an effort to help guide conservation and management strategies to support a healthy future for this species.  Visit the Notes from the field section for updates on our activities to date, and check out the reports from our satellite tracking project.

We are pleased that MRF's first graduate student dedicated herself to expanding the scope of our Short-eared Owl research beginning in 2009 - see the Project Outline for details on this and previous aspects of our program, download a copy of her thesis from our Publications section, or click here for details on how you can help contribute data to expanding the project.  The References section was added in 2008 to provide quick access to a variety of information that may be useful to other researchers studying this species, or anyone else interested in its biology.
