RESEARCH

SHORT-EARED OWL

PROJECT OUTLINE

MRF is undertaking a long-term research program to address conservation concerns regarding the Short-eared Owl, including habitat management, site fidelity, and dispersal/migration patterns.

The first phase of this program, focusing on documenting the breeding and wintering Short-eared Owl populations in southern Ontario, was initiated in May 2003.  In 2006, MRF launched the second phase of research, studying the movements of Short-eared Owls using satellite telemetry. Planning for the third phase began in 2008, and field work began in spring 2009 focusing in more detail on habitat use and population connectivity. Click here for details on how you can help contribute data to the project .
